_Stair-Step Dresser
bubinga, english oak, Honduras mahogany 62" x 48" x 16" $6500 In an import antique furniture store I saw a beautiful Japanese storage chest that could double as stair steps. When I set out to make a dresser for myself, I used the idea to conceive a series of drawer chests of descending scale. I built the lower section first, and lived with it for a time before I designed and built the second level. Then I lived with those two for a time before I built the top drawers. The piece is a sampler of some of my favorite woods, and displays a variety of styles of case joinery. The jewelry box on top was built for my grandmother, and returned to me when she died. All the drawers were dovetail joined by hand. |
